NMN and Resveratrol Together: What the Research Shows (2026)
Short answer
People pair NMN and resveratrol because of a lab hypothesis: sirtuin enzymes use NAD+, NMN is a precursor to NAD+, and resveratrol has been studied for how it interacts with sirtuins. In our review of the published literature we found no human trial that tested the two together, so the pairing rests on separate studies of each ingredient and one mouse study of the combination.
Key facts
- NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a precursor to NAD+. A 2023 trial of 80 healthy adults measured blood NAD at 300, 600 and 900 mg a day over 60 days.
- Resveratrol is a plant polyphenol. In Great Britain, synthetic trans-resveratrol is authorised in adult food supplements up to 150 mg a day.
- Together: the one controlled study of the combination we found was in mice, measuring tissue NAD+.
- Separate capsules: NMN dissolves readily in water, while resveratrol has very low water solubility. Element 5 keeps them as two separate supplements rather than combining them in one capsule.
Why do people take NMN and resveratrol together?
The pairing comes from a proposed pathway, not from a trial result. Sirtuins are a family of enzymes that need NAD+ to work: a 2000 study in Nature showed the yeast sirtuin Sir2 is an NAD-dependent enzyme. NMN is one of the molecules the body uses to make NAD+. Resveratrol was later studied as a compound that might increase sirtuin activity.
The hypothesis: supply the NAD+ that sirtuins use, alongside a compound studied for its interaction with them. This is a lab model, not a demonstrated effect in people.
The idea was popularised by longevity researchers and books in the 2010s. It is a reasonable question for research. It is not, on current evidence, a reason to expect any particular result from taking the two together.
Does resveratrol actually activate sirtuins?
This is disputed, and the dispute matters. Early lab work reported that resveratrol increased the activity of SIRT1, the main human sirtuin. A 2005 study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry then found that this activation depended completely on a fluorescent tag attached to the test substrate. Without the tag, the effect was not seen.
Later research has argued over how, and whether, resveratrol activates SIRT1 under natural conditions. The fair summary is that the mechanism at the centre of the NMN plus resveratrol idea has not been settled.
What have human studies measured?
Each study below tested one ingredient, in one population, at one dose. The findings belong to that study and do not show what either supplement will do for anyone else.
NMN and blood NAD in middle-aged adults (Yi et al., 2023)
- Who
- 80 healthy adults aged 40-65, India
- Dose
- Placebo, 300, 600 or 900 mg NMN daily
- Duration
- 60 days
- Measured
- Blood NAD concentration (primary outcome), safety
Blood NAD rose in all three NMN groups compared with placebo, and was highest in the 600 mg and 900 mg groups. No adverse events were judged related to NMN. The trial was funded by NMN manufacturers and ran for 60 days.
Resveratrol and metabolism in obese men (Timmers et al., 2011)
- Who
- 11 healthy obese men
- Dose
- 150 mg resveratrol daily vs placebo, crossover
- Duration
- 30 days per arm
- Measured
- Energy expenditure, muscle and liver markers, blood markers
The authors reported changes in several metabolic measures, including resting metabolic rate and liver fat. The study was small, short, and limited to one group of men.
How much resveratrol reaches the blood (Walle et al., 2004)
- Who
- 6 healthy volunteers
- Dose
- 25 mg labelled resveratrol, oral and intravenous
- Measured
- Absorption, blood levels, metabolites
At least 70% of the oral dose was absorbed, but only trace amounts of unchanged resveratrol appeared in the blood. Most was rapidly converted into metabolites, which the authors described as very low bioavailability.
Has anyone studied NMN and resveratrol together?
NMN with resveratrol in mice (Bai et al., 2022)
- Who
- Mice
- Dose
- 500 mg/kg NMN, alone or with 50 mg/kg resveratrol, oral
- Measured
- NAD+ levels in different tissues
Compared with NMN alone, the combination was reported to give about 1.6 times the NAD+ in heart tissue and 1.7 times in muscle. These are mouse doses far above human intakes, and the result has not been tested in people.
That is the extent of the direct evidence we found. Claims that the two ingredients are “proven to work better together” go beyond it.
Why doesn't Element 5 combine NMN and resveratrol in one capsule?
Because the two ingredients behave very differently. NMN is water-soluble and dissolves readily. Resveratrol has very low water solubility. Putting them in one capsule would mean formulating two ingredients with very different properties together.
So we sell them as two separate supplements: Element 5 NMN, 500 mg of beta nicotinamide mononucleotide per capsule, and Eternal Resveratrol, 150 mg trans-resveratrol with 100 mg quercetin per capsule. Each capsule contains only its own ingredients, with no fillers or binders, and you can take each one at the time that suits you.

What should you check before buying either?
If you decide to take one or both, these are the details you can verify on the label and the test documents.
- The exact form. NMN should be beta-NMN. For resveratrol, check which form is used and how much is in each capsule.
- The daily amount. Check the resveratrol amount per capsule against the 150 mg a day authorised for trans-resveratrol in GB food supplements.
- Batch testing. Look for an independent certificate that matches the batch number on your pot, using HPLC for NMN.
- What else is in the capsule. Fillers, binders and added ingredients such as quercetin should be listed with amounts.
- How it is formulated. Because NMN and resveratrol dissolve so differently, check whether a combined product explains how both ingredients are formulated together.

Should I take NMN and resveratrol together?
That is a personal decision to discuss with a healthcare professional. The pairing is based on a lab hypothesis about NAD+ and sirtuins, and we found no human trial that tested the combination.
Why are NMN and resveratrol often sold together?
Because of the sirtuin hypothesis: sirtuins use NAD+, NMN is a precursor to NAD+, and resveratrol has been studied for how it interacts with sirtuins. The pairing is a research idea, not a proven combined effect.
Is there a clinical trial of NMN with resveratrol?
We found one controlled study of the combination, in mice (Bai et al., 2022), which measured tissue NAD+. We found no published human trial of the two together.
Why are NMN and resveratrol sold as separate supplements by Element 5?
NMN is water-soluble, while resveratrol has very low water solubility. Element 5 keeps them in separate capsules rather than combining two ingredients with such different properties in one formula.
How much resveratrol can you take in the UK?
Synthetic trans-resveratrol is authorised in adult food supplements up to 150 mg a day.
Does resveratrol activate SIRT1?
It is disputed. A 2005 study found that resveratrol's activation of SIRT1 in the lab depended on a fluorescent tag on the test substrate, and the mechanism is still debated.
Is resveratrol well absorbed?
A 2004 human study found at least 70% of an oral dose was absorbed, but only trace amounts of unchanged resveratrol reached the blood because it is rapidly metabolised.
What is in Element 5 Eternal Resveratrol?
Each capsule contains 150 mg trans-resveratrol and 100 mg quercetin in an HPMC capsule, with no fillers or binders. The directions are one capsule a day.
How much NMN is in Element 5 NMN?
Each vegan capsule contains 500 mg of beta nicotinamide mononucleotide. Batch purity results by HPLC are published in the Lab Test Directory.
